Kitchen Table Writing

A welcoming space for women to write, listen deeply, and feel heard, through writing circles, one-on-one editing support, and restorative retreats.

Come as You Are

At the heart of Kitchen Table Writing is a belief that our stories matter, and that when we are met with compassion, curiosity, and genuine listening, those stories can begin to unfold in meaningful and often surprising ways.

Whether you are a seasoned writer or someone who isn’t quite sure where to begin, you are welcome here. My intention is to meet you with warmth, presence, and deep respect for your voice—and to create a place where your words can come alive.

Liza ushers me into the other place, where writing flows easily.

Women’s Writing Circles

Each circle begins with a brief grounding practice, followed by a poem and optional prompts. Then we write quietly together, letting the pencil move without pressure or expectation.

Afterward, each woman is invited to read aloud, and the circle responds with presence, reflection, and deep listening rather than critique.

I’ve found a supportive space to simply ‘be messy’ and follow my pen.
— Amy Toensing

    —Megan Hale

  • “It feels something like modern day alchemy infused with love and medicinal truth-telling.”

One-on-One Writing Support

Sometimes writing asks for a more private kind of elucidation. In one-on-one sessions, I partner closely with writers to shape and refine their work while honoring the integrity of their voice.

You might arrive with journal pages, poems, personal narratives, the seed of an idea, or a fuller draft that’s ready for deeper attention. Together, we’ll listen for what is already alive in the work and what may help it become clearer, more honest, and more fully itself.

She helped me give Ben a voice and pushed me to write with more honesty, humor, and life than I knew I had.

Why I Write at the Table

Because, once upon a time, I watched
and saw how the adults leaned back
and then the real talking began
Because not everyone can
Because food is color and beauty
Because warm is a full house
Because there is a dance in every constellation
and I am one of the stars
Because every night the moon changes a little
and so do I
Because once I kneeled in my chair
and food my mother touched
was put in front of me
like everyday magic
Because it is so human
Because it is human
Because human
Because it is my grandmother’s table
and my daughter can say the same thing
Because it is inheritance
Because small and big things happen there
like a stage, like a town square, like a
tiny, round universe
Because I like to be alone there
Because it has extra leaves and was once a tree
and I can name the wood
Because it is oak
Because it grew somewhere and there was sunlight and dirt
Because it knew winged things
Because my friend Rich refinished it for me
and now he likes to
run his flat palm over it
like it’s his own skin
Because my children took their first bites of food

pulled up close
Because last night, grown now, they met my eyes across it
and we talked and sat and laughed, we talked
and the world got much, much wider and softer too
and then we sat some more, we stayed

This poem came during a writing circle as I followed my pencil without judgment or critique. I write at the table for all these reasons and more. I write at the table to slow down, to honor what’s real, to play, to feel, and to shape experience into words.

It is my joy and privilege to hold women’s writing circles from that place and to witness the power and connection that emerge when we share our stories and listen deeply to one another. Whether you have written for years or are just beginning to wonder what might be there, I invite you to come take your place in the good circle at my table.

I have never once left our one-on-one sessions together feeling anything but seen, inspired and confident about where I’m headed with my poems and personal narratives…
